Third Party Only
You cannot legally drive or operate a vehicle in the UK without car insurance, and the minimum standard of cover available is Third Party Only, usually known as just Third Party.
By comparing Third-Party car insurance you are of course looking at the cheapest option, that provides the least protection, covering you only for injury to other people and damage to others’ cars and property.
Before choosing Third Party cover, you should give careful consideration to the fact that damage to your own car is not included and you would have to pay for repairs yourself. Nor does Third Party include injury to yourself or damage to your property.
As the lowest price insurance cover available, Third Party is the choice for motorists who have to keep an eye on their costs, such as new and inexperienced drivers or young people for whom Fully Comprehensive cover might be out of their financial reach – at least until they have established a good driving record with the insurer.
Others who may opt for it may be those motorists with a less than perfect driving history, making Third Party the most affordable car insurance.
It is also cost-effective car insurance cover for those who drive low value vehicles - after all there’s little point in a policy that provides for the cost of repairs to your car after an accident if the garage bill is likely to come to more than what the car is actually worth.
What is Included in Third Party Only Cover
Third Party car insurance cover includes:
- Liability for injury to others, including your passengers and the passengers of other drivers
- Liability for damage to other people’s vehicles and property
- Liability for accidents caused by your passengers
- Liability for damage or injury arising from a trailer or caravan being attached to the car
